"Eileen Sackman's exquisitely carved, woodfired pottery showcases threatened and endangered animals, hand-carved lovingly in porcelain or stoneware, immortalized in clay even while their living numbers dwindle in the wild. Their visages are skillfully rendered on functional vessels, calling to mind carved pottery of many cultures intrigued by endemic wildlife the world over and deep into history. Shino liner glaze gives her vessels lustrous, functional interiors, and her pots are wonderfully light compared to the carved work of many other ceramic artists, keeping it everyday functional and, like her charismatic subjects, easy to fall in love with. The woodfire process illuminates these wonderful portrait-like carvings, casting light onto their persons and their plight. This timeless work will find its way into your heart and serve as brilliant showpieces in your collection."- Charlie Cummings Gallery
Artist Statement
As a life-long animal lover and advocate, my activism for all the species on the planet continues to inform my art. My creative expression articulates the care and compassion I have for the animals of the world through the universal language of the arts. Low and high relief sculpture, used by humanity since prehistoric times, marries functional objects and the two and three-dimensional arts in an expressive and comprehensive manner. Employing this centuries-old technique, my work calls attention to threatened and endangered animals, encapsulating their expressive nature through emotional representation. These wood fired portrait-esque pieces bring awareness to species that have been brought to the brink of extinction due to human interference and have been forever impacted by these interactions.
