The building of my anagama kiln started with the design. Influenced by Furutani Michio's book Anagama: Building Kilns and Firing, I found his barrel arch kiln design to be almost exactly what I was looking to create. The Firefly kiln was designed to be slightly larger than Furutani's Iga/Shigaraki style anagama. After four years of in depth research on how he fired I learned so much about what I wanted from a kiln, as well as what I did not want.
Almost the entirety of my career has been dedicated to firing anagama kilns. I have fired a variety of kiln designs both in the traditional anagama style and the more contemporary tube style kilns that have come about in the past 15-20 year. Through my experiences I found myself drawn to the barrel arch.
Taking in consideration the loading and shelf size we determined the interior width to be approximately 4 ft in and the interior height to be approximately 5 ft.
